At Fortnum and Mason, afternoon tea can now begin with caviar. The new Caviar Tea is served in the Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon on the fourth floor of the Piccadilly store, with a choice of Golden Oscietra or Beluga 000, accompanied by tiny buttered crumpets, new potatoes, quail’s eggs and crème fraîche with chives. There is, naturally, a pot of Fortnum’s tea too, and that last detail is more interesting than it might initially sound. Caviar has long been paired with Champagne, vodka and other drinks that have become almost inseparable from its reputation for extravagance.
